…sentimental burnout, ON Underdog
ON Underdog is available on Bandcamp, Spotify, Indiestructable Records…
by Walter Price
If you’re a fan of the hallowed days of alt-rock when The Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and Veruca Salt ruled your cassette collection then the new single “Underdog” from Toronto trio ON is about to rock you.
Inspired by the Stanely Cup-deprived Toronto Maple Leafs and co-produced by Darius Szczepania, this track is not only an anthemic love letter to the underdog team but to the unwavering unity of its fanbase. Which the team has clearly embedded deeply into its community. Replete with powerhouse vocals provided by the incomparable Lucy Di Santo, raw heartbeat from drummer Dan Cornelius and for the money, the blazing brilliance of Steve Fall’s guitar work (check out the 3:15 mark). All and all, “Underdog” is a tight and energetic single that has its fist-pumping vibes rooted equally in the modern-rock past and the post-pandemic now.
The better at top volume “Underdog” is from the forthcoming self-titled album expected on September 16 via Indiestructable Records. And you can stream it now, here at the GTC.
