What is the actual price for progress? Or, rather, what are the things lost along the way? These are questions raised in the Duke & Goldie track, “Where Do Buffalo Roam”.
In a tone reminiscent of late 1960s or early 70s slow-burn Southern rock, vocalist/lyricist Eric Duquette conjures up a scene straight out of the Westward expansion, “Across the expanse far and wide/ Emboldened by a false establishment/ Underneath the living the sky/ Rolled the big steel wheels of settlement—Fortunes made while other’s fortunes turned/ Can what’s been taken ever be returned/ The rifle shrouded in smoke/ Now where do buffalo roam/ Where do buffalo roam…”.
I fancy the idea that this particular narrative is written from the perspective of a native American warrior watching as his food sources and landscapes are being erased. But I’m a big fan of Johnny Cash’s ‘Bitter Tears’, so maybe I’m digging too deep…but isn’t that the beauty of a song? What is certain is the great plains of the US aren’t nearly what they were 150 or so years ago. And have we gained…depletion? Doesn’t seem to much of a victory.
If you’re a fan of story songs and westerns and believe that aggressive progress isn’t all that beautiful, give Duke & Goldie’s “Where Do Buffalo Roam” here at the GTC.

“Duke & Goldie’s 6-song self-titled EP (May 12th, 2023) was recorded in Toronto with producer and pedal steel ace Aaron Goldstein (Julianna Riolino, Daniel Romano, Kathleen Edwards) with rhythm pros Anna Ruddick and Dani Nash. The EP charts out landscapes and stories from thrilling rocky mountain highs, to mysterious remote deserts and walks the line barefoot between warm-folk storytelling and mystical country twang. All while asking deeper questions about the duo’s place in the land they love so much.” – bio
