Tom Petty Won’t Back Down At 63!

T’day The GTC would like to wish Thomas Earl Petty a Very Happy 63rd Year Of Life!

We salute you, Tom Petty, for the way you took your interest of 60’s country music and your love of the era’s Rock N’ Roll and turned it into a defining sound that is forever cemented you into the lives of millions.

Although we haven’t heard a single bad album from you and/or your band, we would like to point-out some of the best of the best.  Albums that made getting older a whole lot better.

  • Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (’76)
  • Damn the Torpedoes (’79)
  • Hard Promises (’81)
  • Southern Accents (’85)
  • Full Moon Fever (’89)
  • Into the Great Wide Open (’91)
  • The Last DJ (’02)
We do have to add that in our, humble opinion, the coolest thing you ever did was the little thing called The Traveling Wilburys!

What cosmic forces aligned to have you, Jeff Lynn, Roy Orbison, George Harrison & Bob Dylan get together and have every note, recording, verse and performance come out so remarkably stellar that no one will ever be able to replicate it!

Oh, to be a fly on the wall in Dylan’s studio that day this all came together would be unbelievable….

People often speak of ‘one of a kind’ sound to describe this or that act but the term should be reserved for what you five cats gave the world. Too bad we have lost some of the great voices that made up this bang-on spectacular musical gift from the gods. Once in a lifetime experience.

Let the music live on, go buy all things The Traveling Wilburys immediately!

Hey Tom, you’ve never been at a lose for words. What say you?

“Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There’s not some trick involved with it. It’s pure and it’s real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things.” – Tom Petty

“I’m barely prolific and incredibly lazy.” – Tom Petty

“I don’t know, my music has always just come from where the wind blew me. Like where I’m at during a particular moment in time.” – Tom Petty

“We don’t really make bad records, though some people might like some more than others. And we have never really done a bad show. So I think in a way maybe we’ve been taken for granted.” – Tom Petty

“There used to be this real sense of community integrity in rock. It has really eroded. Everyone seems to be on their own now.” – Tom Petty

“I’m sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the shittier stuff gets…I don’t really see a George Jones or a Buck Owens or any anything that fresh coming up. I’m sure there must be somebody doing it, but most of that music reminds me of rock in the middle Eighties where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos.” – Tom Petty

“I’ve never had any idea that what I like would resonate with the audience, and I’m pleasantly surprised when it does.” – Tom Petty

Well said said Mr. Petty!
