Desperate times can do many things to a soul and if you’re Boston songwriter Susan Cattaneo, you craft yourself a gorgeous 9-track LP ‘All Is Quiet’ brimming with heartache and perseverance.
I found this album via a Facebook video post for a live version of the title track. I was immediately reminded of soft rock AM radio hits by Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, and Rita Coolidge. A bygone era replaced by formulaic pop tunes, so I was quite taken with this sympathetic return to the “good ol’ days” if you will.
Underneath this song’s surface is a poetic darkness that will resonate with many who’ve navigated the murky waters of loneliness. Cattaneo sings in a tranquil voice, “Sitting vigil/ In this house until/ The morning comes—Wondering if I’ll/ be myself still/ when all is done/ and I’m right back to square one—Idle hands make idle worries—Have I lost all sound and story—All is quiet/ All is quiet/ All is quiet/ So begins an end…”.
Digging into those lines will induce endless chills. The truth can hurt and with this song, the ache is palpable only to be cushioned by Cattaneo’s warm delivery. A balance that’s all the magic.
