One of today’s most cerebral pop songwriters and one of the names that soundtracked my youth have collided in sweet sweet harmony for a dancefloor-ready smash called “Cliffhanger”. Of course, I’m speaking about Holiday Sidewinder and her surprising collab with pop icon Kim Wilde.
And if you think its Sidewinder’s growing fanbase that’s surprised about this pairing, on 19 January, Sidewinder posted this endearing message on Facebook, “Singing my life with a song” Kim replied to me when I sent it to her and then I promptly began to die of pure shock, honour and excitement that she was going to be singing with me on this special record, only to be further frazzled and totally overwhelmed with tears of joy when I received her perfect perfect extraordinary and pure vocals. We’ll have to play them a Capella in one of those making of docos with a neve desk one day.” Respect.
“Cliffhanger”, with its island pop-rock vibes and Holiday’s poetry in motion is a self-reflective era-less beauty. Even if the lyrics are a somewhat sharp look at the realities of going one’s own way. But, again, Sidewinder isn’t shy about much. This is the magic of an authentic songwriter fighting the formulaic algorithms. Independence is a journey in all aspects.
