My Reason Why

by Walter Price

“Massive cinematic monster”, “moment of hope”, “a queer apocalyptic love story”…? What an odd list of ingredients for a love song. Or are they… The song is “You’re My Reason Why” from Charlotte Carpenter’s meticulous debut album, ‘A Modern Rage’ and it’s a powerful journey.

Carpenter goes deep into this somewhat bleak love song’s origin story on her track-by-track podcast, so rather than going into my subjective thoughts on this beautiful ode to persevering connections, have a listen to the show. It’s a brilliant listen.

What I will share thoughts on is the track’s mesmerizing film. Directed by Margo Roe, this music video is a cinematic masterstroke. A stark look at the realities of the aftermath of chaos and the love story intertwined within is as heartbreaking as it is tangible and lovely. Trigger warning; at around the 4-minute mark, have a tissue at hand. Those tears that’ll undoubtedly form on your cheek are going to need a dab or two.

By now, I hope you’ve been fortunate enough to listen to Charlotte Carpenter’s gorgeous debut LP ‘A Modern Rage’—the 11-track Matt de Burgh Daly-produced journey through an already-established songwriter’s road to self-control… an artistic rebirth, if you will. And, again, have a listen to the accompanying podcast. It’s a must for any songwriter.

You can stream “You’re My Reason Why” and see its brilliantly emotional film, here at the GTC.

Even if the world will fall apart
You know I’ll still be here, falling for you.
