Austin-based multifaceted artist SKATELAND (Dorian Williams II) has gifted us all one of the most chilled flow-of-consciousness pop songs. It is called “Autobahn!” and it, like its creator, is an androgynous and quirky stroke of genius.

Have you ever been bopping around your house and started singing whatever thought or memory that’s streaming through your frontal lobe? Sure, it may sound a bit strange to the wary passerby if they should happen upon you, but in reality, these words have a deep-rooted context for you. So singing them is a form of therapy…regardless of the off-kilter, if you will, delivery mechanism. That is what “Autobahn!” sounds like to me and I’m absolutely in love with the phrasing and the overall vibe. Especially the unexpected switcharoo final chapters. Whimsical.

But, here’s where all the so-called oddness of this track becomes even more, let’s say…peculiar. Directed by Dorian Williams II himself with Nathaniel Pinheiro on cinematography, the short film/music video is an avant-garde gem. Now, I don’t want to give too much away here, because the film must be seen to be believed. But I will say, that you come across a cast of oddballs, perhaps a murder, a wedding, a slippery situation, and possibly one of the most surreal dance sequences you’ll lay your perplexed little eyes on. Have I said too much? That’s for you to decide…

You can stream and witness both the single and its music video, here at the GTC.

The narrator begins the song with what he presumes is a breakup speech, but somehow along the way concedes that for better or worse he will always love this person, and that the tough parts of loving someone are what make it worth it in the end.” – SKATELAND
