John Melencamp Is Very Cool

John Mellencamp RS Cover 1986

The GTC would like to wish John “Cougar” Mellencamp A Very Happy 62nd Birthday!

We would like to give you praise for being one of the most successful Americana singer/songwriter rockers of the late 70’s and well into the 80’s & beyond.

You may not get the mainstream airplay for your latest albums, which is a travesty in our minds, but your work is just as cool as it ever was.

The way you, Mr. Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, delivered the stories of America’s Heartland into the ears of millions worldwide can never be forgotten!

We especially thank you for recording the bad-ass albums  John Cougar (’79), American Fool (’82), Scarecrow (’85), Human Wheels (’93) & Rough Harvest (’99).

Wow, what a prolific writer you have been man. And we, the world, are all the better for it!

Not a track of your’s can come on the radio without a flood of memories of the times and places we were when we first heard them.

Could we hear a bit from your own mouth? Well, sure we can…

“I’m using my art to comment on what I see. You don’t have to agree with it.” – John Mellencamp

“A lot of record company people, even though they’re our age, want to be perceived as young hip guys, and they’re hurting the business.” – John Mellencamp

“I’m the guy who wrote The Authority Song. Did they think I was kidding? Did they think it was only a song to entertain?” – John Mellencamp

“I thought I knew a lot about music. Then you start digging and the deeper you go, the more there is.” – John Mellencamp

“I don’t have to worry about any pop sensibility. I can write adult songs, and I don’t have to worry about choruses and hook lines.” – John Mellencamp
