If you’re a big-time comedy name like Segura, Chappelle, Katt, or the like, you probably have the cash or connections to open your comedy special with some huge hit song or classic whatnot. But if you’re a blue-collar Alabama-raised country boy comedian like Dusty Slay you call on your good buddies singer-songwriters Jesse Daniel and Jodi Lyford to pen you a song that embodies all a hard workin’ so and so can relate to. And the result may just be a good ol’ country toe-tapper called “Workin’ Hard (Day & Night)”.
With its sound reminiscent of tunes by Jerry Reed, Strait, Mel McDaniel, and Coe, “Workin’ Hard (Day & Night)” borrows a little from both Slay’s life and the trials and tribulations of a working comedian as well as Daniel and Lyford’s livin’ and giggin’ on the road and the result is a timeless Friday night jukebox quarter hog.
Been workin’ hard, both day and night
Tryin’ to make my way, turn the wrongs to right.
It ain’t a simple job, but I love what I do.
Workin’ hard is all this old boy knows to do.
Something about a no-fills country song makes the long workweek worth doing. And this one is one of those through and through. So after your long day hocking pesticides or what have ya, you have yourself a new song to soundtrack that eager drive to the Western Sizzlin’, but stay away from the green beans…
After all, we’re having a good time and you can stream “Workin’ Hard (Day & Night)”, here at the GTC.

“My comedian friend Dusty Slay reached out one day and asked me to write a song for his upcoming Netflix special. Dusty is a workin’ man’s comic (hence the name of his special) so Jodi and I started writing without hesitation. We incorporated some things that were directly inspired by Dusty and his life, while pulling from our own experience. Dusty makes comedy for every day, workin’ people and those are the same people I make country music for. I’m honored to have my song on his first Netflix special.” – Jesse
