Ok, die-hard fans of Dea Matrona kindly step aside for a minute and let me speak to my recent discovery of this bastian of breezy takin-it-easy rock-n-roll. The Belfast duo, Mollie McGinn and Orlaith Forsythe seem to have forgotten that rock continued on after 1979. And since the years between 1966 and 1980 are some of the most seminal years for said genre, I truly dig their unpretending timeless vibes.
As I mentioned, I just stumbled across the airy harmonies and soft rock backdrops of Dea Matrona so I sorta listened to their indelible catalog in reverse. So for this week’s ‘deep cut’ let’s go back to the grand year of 2019 and their you-can-do-it Ronstadt-vibed single, “Hard on Yourself”. “When the whole world is looking at you/ The whole world is looking at you/ Don’t go too hard on yourself/ When you don’t know what to do/ You don’t know what to do/ Don’t go too hard on yourself…”. Some simple and life-affirming wisdom we can all live by and with a rhythm such as this single, when things get tough humming this verse could make all the difference. Of course, there is quite a bit more lyrically going on in this song, but the chorus is heady and it’ll stick with you for a spell.
Ok, die-hard fans, I’ve said my peace, so you can denounce me for being late to the party…But there’s no need. I’m here now and we can all stream and view “Hard on Yourself”, here at the GTC.
