There’s that old quote that goes something like, “Sometimes your roots are dug so deep that even if you want to escape, it doesn’t let you.”… that’s the sentiment spelled out in the closing track, “Oklahoman Son“, on Zach Bryan’s much-talked-about self-titled LP.
“You can’t hide where you’re from/ With nightcrawler blood on your casting thumb/ You can fight and fiend and sell your guns/ But you’ll always be the Oklahoman son…”, Bryan sings in his raw and humbled Red Dirt signature style. And the truths being spoken here have resonated with his fanbase and newer converts alike.
One of those fans, Detroit area singer-songwriter Turner Porter certainly has found a rooted connection. He’s dropped a fine cover version of the track and his American folk touches add a new respectful dynamic that Bryan fans will appreciate. Cover songs are quite often a mixed bag, but Porter is not only a brilliant songwriter in his own right but also an adamant student of music. And this redux is all the proof you need that Porter remains a true melomaniac.
You can stream both versions of “Oklahoman Son”; here at the GTC.

“This song helped me realize we are who we are and we can’t back down. I believe in myself, my wife, and our soon-to-be-born son. I can do this, even if I am some blue-collar boy from downriver.” – T. Porter
