I’ve always had a soft spot for post-1960s neo-soul artists—gifted voices such as Sade, India.Arie, Lauren Hill, and Joplin-inspired Joss Stone often waft from my speakers on a chill day with a cup of tea. Now, quite by accidental discovery, I happily add another gifted artist to the rotation. Her powerful name is Wellington Bullings and she has a single so warm it’ll send tingle throughout your soul.
The single I stumbled across that started my nearly instant love for this Berklee College of Music alum’s catalog is called “Blossom” and it’s a staggering beauty. Bullings’ voice in this song is comforting and full of dexterity as it navigates the complexity of a heart’s need for forgiveness and connectivity. It’s gorgeous and smooth and punctuated by not only Bullings’ natural gifts as a songwriter and composer but also by Shane Endsley’s trumpet. It is a true surprise ingredient that brings the jazz and soul to an intoxicating result.
