I’d rather die young, WKND SPIN: SHUTUPS – “That’s a Long Time to Be on Fire”
Shutups – ‘Every Day I’m Less Zen‘ is available @ Apple Music.

by Walter Price
Oakland garage/punk duo Shutup’s album ‘Every Day I’m Less Zen’ is a triumph on multiple fronts. A raw 10-track expression of perseverance and the emotional pitstops along the way. “That includes panic and anxiety, PTSD triggers, but also long periods of blank emotion and nothing, just looking at walls. A lot of songs draw from my medical issues as a way to deal with that trauma. I occasionally reference events or personal relationships, but nothing ever fits into a linear narrative.”, vocalist Hadley Davis explains.
The blatant opener, “That’s a Long Time to Be on Fire”, is an urgent and potent timebomb. Thoughts of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Green Day and Cage The Elephant waft through the panging track. As much of the power is derived from Davis’ forthrightness that explodes within the chaotic soundscape. Pure tactual energy.
Take the track (and album) for a spin and add it to your weekend/summer playlists….we have, @ GTC WKND SPIN.
