The new single “I Want Fire” from Calgary duo Miesha & The Spanks is a growling stick of dynamite. For fans of Wanton Bishops, White Stripes, and/or Illiterate Light this lusty ode to rekindling some ‘fire’ (of varying definitions) will feel right at home on their pedal-to-the-metal playlists.

With Sean Hamilton on drums and Miesha Louie’s mighty vocals seemingly cutting through any misconceptions about this song’s intentions, Louie explains that this firecracker track is open to interpretation, “I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to burn down, but something needed to go. My maternity leave should have ended, so I could go on tour and play rad festivals with my husband on parental leave. But suddenly we were two stay-at-home parents with two six-month-old babies, unable to perform or socialize, confined to the same routine, getting in each other’s space, and driving each other crazy. As I wrote, it became less about burning down what was pissing me off and more about lighting up my own fire and getting back to our normal.”
And to add more coolness to this Leeroy Stagger produced single, check out the film, directed by Hans Grossmann. It’s a nod to any one of the haunting ‘cabin in the woods’ type horror flicks. A conjuring is afoot as the pair summons whatever it is hidden just out of reach. Set in the snowy forest surrounding Lower Kananaskis Lake (Alberta) the bleakness adds to the raw power of this song’s lyrics and undeniable drive. Sam Raimi, eat your heart out!
