The lyrical depths of Josephine Johnson’s new single, “Built to Last”, are as palpable as words can be. And while Johnson’s shadowy vocals and poetic verses have been compared to the likes of Emmylou Harris and Rosanne Cash, readers of the GTC may also find stylish similarities to Lo Carmen and Pauline Andrès as well. Soft yet sturdy alt-Americana that would sound brilliant in smoke-filled dancehalls far and wide.

This track travels the contrasts of want and need just like the Stones once lamented, with nods to Lord Huron and The Beatles along its near 4 minute run time. Johnson shares some backstory, “I loved someone very much, but ultimately knew that the path I’m on, doing music professionally, touring–would be done without him, though in my heart it always felt that I was the one he needed. Funny, I know now that I don’t need him!”

If you’re into the feeling of a slow-burn, Patsy Cline and/or soundtracks from David Lynch movies, then add “Built to Last” to your fave going-your-own-way playlist. And you can stream this new beauty as well as 2018’s ‘The Spark’ album, now at the GTC.

I’m not 25, I’ve never been married, I put myself through school, I book my own shows, I’m the roadie, I’m the writer, I’m the singer, and I am doing exactly what I want to do,” – Josephine Johnson
