Wrapped up in its nostalgic pop vibes, the recent single, “Why Cut Time”, by Chicagoan songwriter Jennifer Hall rests a message of embracing the precious moments you have. Every generation has its life-changing trials and tribulations but it would have seemed impossible to predict what the world has gone through the past couple of years. Devastating political strife, racial injustice, police brutality, and gender identity freedoms being tested at every turn are just a handful of social issues that were made even more polarizing by the worldwide pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. It kind of makes you look at the world and the people around you and ponder how momentary the human experience really is.
Quickly in a fading game
In and out, a winner’s flame
Make it last just as long as it burns
Running circles while we ever turn
Hateful heart to lead a pack
Painful heart to feed attacks
Cuz the game never played out so fair
Still a shooter runs, no breathing air
Nobody leaves here alone
Blood runs dry
Nobody leaves here alone
Why cut time
Nobody leaves here alone
Drifting high
Nobody leaves here alone
Why cut time…
Weighty zeitgeist messaging, but Hall’s soft as a beach breeze vocals soften the blow as you close your eyes and let the track ease you into its powers. A real balance of calm and turbulence, a dualism that’s softened, visually, in the accompanying music video. As the camera follows Hall on a contemplative stroll along the waterfront from dawn to dusk, the images seem to express the impermanence of time. Simple, pretty, and compelling.
Life is brief yet full of experiences and people that leave fragile and indelible marks, “Why Cut Time” is here to remind us to embrace it all. And you can stream the we’re-all-in-this-together track as well as see its music video, now at the GTC.

And on and on and on and on and on, the pleading cries
Still on and on and on and on and on, a bleeding grind
Hands up and high, no gun, still dying, shouting to keep their time
Young hearts and eyes and minds, forever played, trying to rewind…
