I’m not totally versed in the science of melodies, but I’m almost certain they’re not supposed to punch you the fucking gut like Foxx Bodies’ new single, “Bad Kid”, does. But then again, the trauma being worked out is so weighty, personal, and devastating, all the crunchy chaos makes perfect sense. Who’ll ever truly know why vocalist Bella Vanek wants the world to know her deep dark realities, but she does and so many, unfortunately, will resonate with her journey.

Now I’m a bad kid.
My mind’s a swampland.
I’ve learned to sit with it.
Made me a bad kid.
I wish you told me.
I would have fixed it.

My mind’s a swampland–
I wish you told me–

Your love is bullshit
You are a piece of shit.

“Bad Kid” is taken from the band’s upcoming 13-track LP, ‘Vixen’, expected November 5, 2021, via Kill Rock Stars. And to add more twisted and gutwrenching truths to this single, the new album’s press sheet says this about the release, “Foxx Bodies’ second album, Vixen, required thousands of dollars in therapy and medication to create. What started as another album filled with harsh memories of childhood and sexual abuse quickly evolved into a present-day telling of the lead singer’s battle with various mental illnesses as she was diagnosed with them. An exploration of queer identity, the permanent impact that trauma has on the brain, and an unfiltered inside perspective on psychiatric hospitalization and borderline personality disorder can be found within these 13 tracks.”

If you’re a fan of Pixies, Dinsaur Jr., and/or Sonic Youth, then this heavy alt-rock masterclass will find its place in your is-love-bullshit playlist. You can stream it and see its music video, directed by G Leonardo, now at the GTC.

“Foxx Bodies often describes themselves as an accident. Bailey Moses, Adam Bucholz, and Matt Vanek came together in their shared home when their singer Bella Vanek asked everyone to play loud music she could scream over after she began unpacking her newly-recognized childhood abuse. While each of them had been practicing musicians from a young age, none had been in a band before Foxx Bodies.” – bio
