BETTER LATE THAN NEVER THREE-WAY: Soulful Sounds of Elle King
Elle King – ‘Shake the Spirit’ available now @ iTunes.
by Walter Price
It was just a month ago, during a cozy shindig in my flat, that a friend said she had an Elle King playlist that would get people moving. I hadn’t heard of King so it was hard to gauge what was coming. As the first track played, I found myself thinking, “Oh, this is one of those Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone R&B revivalist artists.” Which is obviously fine with me, but then as the night and the playlist progressed, I couldn’t help but realize the unusual depths in which King was laying out.
With the blending of country and rockabilly instrumentation and beats into her soulful pop sounds, King is creating soundscapes I don’t think I’ve ever heard before. Then a week later a did a deep dive into her video releases, live performances and it all cemented my conclusion that this is a one-of-a-kind phenom. Doing it her way…And yes, I understand this probably isn’t new news to you.
Sassy, earnest, confident, sexy, and a mouth to put you in your place all adding to her spectacular multifaceted sounds. Making Elle King a new addiction. And in no particular order, I’ll share just three of my new to me favorites from King. As Chaucer would note, “Better late than never”…
The latest album ‘Shake the Spirit’ is out now.
For fans of Wanda Jackson, Amy Winehouse, and Fontella Bass.
