Echo & The Bunnymen Come Again

Ian McCulloch & Will Sergeant
When Echo & The Bunnymen hit their commercial stride in the 80’s is unlike anything else going. A band with a singer reminiscent of a modern day Jim Morrison, still is, and a band of players shelling out dark pop/rock tunes that helped carry the murkier side of the emerging alternative movement.

This is now and last two founding members of the crucial UK rock band, Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, are back with their new Martin “Youth” Glover (Killing Joke) produced album Meteorites. An album that McCulloch says he had to dig deeper within than he has ever done before. Telling The York Press in April “For me, this is a whole new approach. It’s more edgy than anything I’ve ever done; I’m dealing with something on this record I didn’t want to deal with for a long time.”

From what we’ve been able to hear from the new album, well done. Such introspection must hurt but it works out for the listener. It’s also hard to imagine that in the current ‘catchy chorus and hook over depth’ system of big radio that there is a place for a band with songs of substance. We’ll see.

The newest incarnation of The Bunneymen are hitting the road in support of Meteorites and we bet a million that old school favorites from their hollowed 35 year career will have places of prominence in their set lists.
