David Bowie
by Walter Price
Before David Bowie found me or I him I was wonderfully lost in classic rock as it was new. KISS, Eagles, Dr. Hook and Zeppelin were (and still are) my rock diet. Then at about nine or so I had a babysitter or whatever she was that had a small collection that held Heroes, Honky Dory and Pin Ups. These albums melted my senses. This was Rock N Roll, these were a new kind of pop and these albums confused, delighted and captivated. I didn’t own any Bowie until Let’s Dance, another album where the Thin White Duke changed things up and utilized the current at the time players to bend what was the norm in popular radio. To me it personifies the 80’s and the new directions music could and did go.
I simply, like everyone, think Bowie allowed music to breath in all directions. No boundaries. Without him there wouldn’t be hundreds of artists doing what they are doing today…Rest In Peace Master Bowie.
Here are 3 Bowie’s “Heroes” covers by female artists you need to know….
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing, will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day
And you, you can be mean
And I, I’ll drink all the time
‘Cause we’re lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we’re lovers, and that is that
Though nothing, will keep us together
We could steal time, just for one day
We can be heroes, forever and ever
What’d you say?
I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, forever and ever
Oh we can be heroes, just for one day
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, forever and ever
Then we could be heroes, just for one day
We can be heroes
We can be heroes
We can be heroes
Just for one day
We can be heroes
We’re nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we’re lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day
