Each and every new sunrise brings its own mysterious future. It’s how one interprets what’s to come or perhaps how one manages their own expectations of what lies ahead is the vibe of singer-songwriter Carolyn Kendrick’s recent authentically folk single “Break of Day”. In a down-home vocal, she sings, “Early in the morning, break of day / and I wonder what’s gonna come my way…” Which feels like a broad and palpable metaphor for facing life head-on anew each day. A much-needed reminder set to a lovely soft and airy arrangement that’ll have you humming along in no time.

In a quote provided to the GTC, Kendrick reflects on the song’s origin story, “During the time of my cross country move, I started waking up uncharacteristically early feeling a lot of apprehension about what my future would look like. I wrote ‘Break of Day’ very literally at the break of day, early in the morning on one of those days. Ultimately, I wrote this song to work through the anxiety I feel about time passing, and the potential for opportunities slipping through my fingers. At the end of the day, you can make a plan and try to stick to it, but we’ll never have full control over what happens to us.”

What a beautifully thought-out perspective to start the year out on. You can stream “Break of Day”, here at the GTC.

“Carolyn Kendrick is a lifelong musician weaned on Willie and Billie (Nelson and Holiday, respectively) who has nurtured a signature aesthetic that draws on both of these artist’s traditions, all the while adding in sprinklings of her love of old-time music, bluegrass, and indie-rock. In the last five years, the North California-based fiddler, singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer, and composer has blossomed as a solo artist, boldly venturing beyond her role as an eclectic and virtuosic instrumentalist. Carolyn is now set to release a pair of reflective, self-produced Americana singles, including “Break of Day,” out November 4th, that are informed by real life experiences.” – bio
