The power of love can be an uneven concoction. And the foundations of an endless list of your favorite songs. And, although late to the party, a new fave is now embedded in my landscape. Multi-Grammy winning Brandi Carlile’s “Party Of One” from the beautiful ‘By The Way, I Forgive You’ album (co-produced by Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings).
The track is a love story. A passionate tale of love and anger and the way we can’t leave. Not because of control issues, but because of the realism and strength of the bond. In a quote from Billboard, Carlile explains, “I don’t think marriage is work, but I hear straight couples asked all the time, ‘Do you feel different now that you’re married?’ And they’re like, ‘Hell, no,’ because marriage is an institution they’ve had access to since the beginning of time. But it is different for us. That’s what ‘Party of One’ is about: No matter how epic the fight is, you always have to ask yourself what you can do to stay.”
The Bérénice Eveno directed video stars Elisabeth Moss and Nicole Disson in sensitive and powerful performances. Conveying such an emotional arch in under six-minutes seems remarkable, yet, its done here in haptic truths.
If you’re wondering why it’s taken me so long to find the powers of Carlile. Honestly, h don’t know. But what I can tell you is that her words at the 2019 Grammy Awards really lit my soul. I may be paraphrasing here, but she had this to say, “Americana music is the island of the misfit toys and I am such a misfit.”
“I came out of the closet at 15 years old, when I was in high school, and I can assure you that I was never invited to any parties. I never got to attend a dance,” she continued. “To be embraced by this enduring and loving community has been the dance of a lifetime. Thank you for being my island.”
Honest words can unite, and change the world.
