There’s quite a bit I truly dig about LA Queercore artist Belted Sweater [Christopher Patrick Gregory] and his The Sisters of Mercy’s “Dominion” redux. Firstly, 99.5 % of TikTok-era dingdongs wouldn’t know the late 80s synth-goth social conscious classic or its gigantic game-changing Petra-inspired music video, at all—which is a travesty by any measure. Secondly, Belted Sweater’s spot on Bandcamp bio blurb, “Like if Henry Rollins was in the Pet Shop Boys but with live drums and even gayer lyrics, chronicling terribly awkward Grindr hookups.”

And thirdly, which leans heavily on secondly, Belter Sweater’s version of “Dominion” is chockfull of dark after-hours disco vibes, goth-punk cerebral angst, and understated urgency, and it’s far more emotional than the whole concept would lead you to believe in its press materials. It’s one of those tracks you have to experience to fully grasp the respect for what soundtracked CPG’s high school years. A real post-pandemic spark of genius.

Belted Sweater’s rethink of “Dominion” is an absolute speaker popper and you can do just that, you can turn it all the way up and rattle your neighbors here at the GTC.

In the heat of the night
In the heat of the day
When I close my eyes
When I look your way
When I meet the fear that lies inside
When I hear you say
In the heat of the moment
Say, say, say
