At the time of release (2017), Iron & Wine‘s Sam Beam reflected upon his inspiration behind his seminal LP ‘Beast Epic’, “I have been and always will be fascinated by the way time asserts itself on our bodies and our hearts. The Ferris wheel keeps spinning and we’re constantly approaching, leaving, or returning to something totally unexpected or startlingly familiar. The rite of passage is an image I’ve returned to often because I feel we’re all constantly in some stage of transition.”
And, arguably, there isn’t a more beloved single from this masterpiece album than “Call It Dreaming”. Already a delicate love song, Seattle’s Glass Heart String Choir, as an endearing favor, has not only kept to the original’s sentimental beauty but has added their signature serene gracefulness in a cover version that’s simply put, breathtaking.
In an email conversation, vocalist Ian Williams shared with me a glimpse of the backstory behind this tranquil revival, “Call It Dreaming has been in my periphery for years, as one of Iron & Wine’s most popular songs, popping up in TV and radio regularly. Like many songs, it isn’t until Katie and I sit down with them and really pull apart the music and lyrics while learning them that the subtleties and deeper meanings come through. This recording was a special request from a friend, to make a recording as a wedding gift to their partner. With that in mind, we dove into the song and attempted to focus on and accentuate the love-song aspects of the original.
“For me, the choruses are where we found our “in” to the song:
“Where the time of our lives is all we have
And we get a chance to say
Before we ease away
For all the love you’ve left behind
You can have mine…”
GHSC’s Williams and Katie Mosehauer are no strangers to crafting emotionally picturesque soundscapes, and their cover of “Call It Dreaming” is no exception. And It’s difficult not to imagine the two participants of the inspirational nuptial not being able to hold back tender tears of unwavering devotion as this song gently plays.
You can stream this forever gift to those who love and want to be so, now at the GTC.

“Friends-in-arms reveling at the intersection of classical virtuosity, existential poetics, and art-film surrealism, Seattle art-pop duo Glass Heart String Choir weaves golden lyrical threads of Haute-art into their achingly beautiful orchestral tapestry.” – artist bio
