The new single from Toronto duo Your Paris [Nick Babcock and Laila Kharouba] is a big pop song created in the indie world. The soundtrack ready “First” is an examination of the not oft talked about feeling of exhilaration in the wake of another person who is deteriorating. Although not really a fun look at the consequences of love gained/lost, here it works in its brilliant chill vibes, Kharouba’s whispery vocal dexterity, and the brilliantly produced arrangement that bonds it all together.
“Relationships, love and even ‘happiness’ itself are not always clear cut. They’re complicated, and can be somewhat polarizing, but in a way that’s what it’s all about. You wouldn’t appreciate the highs if you didn’t have the lows. “First” captures the duality of simultaneous love and heartbreak.”
