When was the last time in these modern ages that you had actual eager anticipation for an album’s release? For me, it’s been a while. Until this week and the long-awaited new one from And We Should Die Of That Roar was set to drop. The album is ‘Where We Lay Our Bones’, and I got up early, clicked open Spotify, delighted it was available and went for a long run. Soaking up all the social consciousness, dirty blues, and remarkable musicianship Hardy Hum is known for.
Highlights are the Gospel opening of “Woke Up This Morning”, the roadhouse grit of “Too Much Blues Can Break You Down”, Tom Waits power of the title track, and (fave, so far) “Big Bright Sun” replete with Hum’s signature growl, classic rock licks and whistling to boot. No one whistles in song anymore…
It’s hard to predict such things, but I’ll go out on a limb and say this album will be one of the most unique, if socially important, releases of 2019. I’ll spend my weekend getting to know the album better, and so should you. It’s a harsh world out there, and this album goes there and is a top weekend spin.
