Tequila Mockingbyrd is an Australian rock band based in Melbourne, and I recently picked their brand new video ‘Everyone Down’ for my Track of the Day. The band released the EP T-Byrds Are Goin 2014, and it’s a bold, brash, and very promising four-track treat that showcases their back-to-basics hard rocking sound, with a taste of punk, and a slice of old-school pop thrown in for good measure.

First track off the EP is also my favourite in the track-list: ‘Money Tree’ is a devilishly catchy speedster of a tune with something of a Chrissie Hynde-feel in the vocals, and, well…that can’t be wrong.

Second track ‘Everyone Down’ rumbles along with a bouncy yet powerful heartbeat from the drums and bass – there’s a rowdy, urgent feel to this track that gives it a real party-fuel flavour.

Tequila Mockingbyrd reviewThe band catches a darker tone on ‘Catalyst’ with some heavier guitar, and a more rugged, stripped down sound: I really love the guitar and bass on this tune, and there’s a raw intensity in the lyrics and vocals that gives the track an edge.

T-Byrds Are Go closes out with the rowdy rocker ‘Shut Me Down’ – a defiant and fierce party-rocker that amps up the band’s rock’n’roll attitude.

This EP might still be a bit rough around the edges but that is also a reason why I like it: there’s a nerve and fire in the music that makes it stand out.  According to the band’s Facebook page, they are currently recording their debut album and I’ll be very interested to see what they can do with a fuller, longer track-list.

Tequila Mockingbyrd seems to be a crew ready to take off in full flight: they have been playing lots of gigs across Australia, they recently scored a spot opening for famed Australian band Baby Animals in Melbourne May 29th, and there are also some European tour-dates in the works for 2015. With this kind of drive, energy, and rock’n’roll fire-power, Tequila Mockingbyrd is definitely a band to watch.
