Let’s go back just a spell. Back to the year 2020 when best mates Merideth Kaye Clark and Jenn Grinels joined forces to form the Americana duo Siren Songs and released an absolutely stunning self-titled roots LP.
The 9-track ‘Siren Songs’ transcends time as it’s a curated balance of striking original compositions and some pretty meticulous cover songs as well. As I said, this is pure Americana through and through, but don’t sleep on the hints of Broadway-stage-sized touches, classic pop sensibilities, and the obvious care taken in crafting these songs that feel as if they were born solely to soundtrack wildflower-strewn meadows. But, for me, the undeniable star on this LP are the harmonies. The natural powers these two voices have when they come together is something to behold. Addictive.
Album highlights include covers of the Dolly Parton fan-favorite “Jolene“, John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery“, and the surprising reimagining of Cyndi Lauper’s first Billboard #1, “Time After Time“. Lest I forget, the original works, “Goodnight Sun, Hello Moon” and “100“. Both are instant rootsy soft-pop classics.
