I’ve been drawn to sad songs my whole life, there’s a vulnerability and a tenderness in them that I’m completely magnetized by.”  – Emma Swift

Today, for the first time in my life I woke up on my birthday feeling miserable. Like an isolated island if you will and it immediately struck me that I needed some perfectly dreary sad songs to pick me up. Not irony but a long treasured companion for those moments of gloomy realizations.

I assembled a long playlist of historic and newer classics of melancholy but here we’ll look at just 10 must hear songs that will tingle and perpetuate your heartbreak…pour a whiskey..

The Smiths . Heaven Know I’m Miserable Now

Emma Swift . Woodland Street

Hank Williams (and Pleasant Valley Boys) . I’m so Lomesome I could Cry

Etta James – All I Could Do Is Cry

Vic Chestnut . Flirted With You All My Life

Eagles – Desperado

Ben Folds . Brick

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah

George Jones – he stopped Loving Her Today

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
