In the public eye John Lydon hasn’t been accused of holding back or keeping his thoughts close to his vest and the same can be said for his body of music. From causing near treasonous chaos with the Sex Pistols to his (and bandmates) in your face rock and dance outfit Public Image Ltd. Well, they’re back with a new single called Double Trouble from the forthcoming What The World Needs Now….(add your own whatever). The track is an ode to domestic life told the only way Lydon and company could do. Starting with a beat that could break backs and Lydon’s frank response to what could be his wife’s nagging honey-do-list and moving quickly and solidly into a modernized classic PiL sound. Brilliant guitar work and the lyrics hit and hit right, tactile, sarcastic and hard…Yeah Yeah Yeah… The band and Lydon sound more confident and tighter as they ever have before. I swear I held off listening to this track for as long as possible thinking it would possibly be a rehash of old school industrial rock but what a pleasant surprise.
I am going to throw caution to the wind and say that the recent wave of new found glory and new fans worldwide due to Lydon’s recent book Anger Is An Energy of honesty and his media blitz have endeared legions of newer music fans and this new found acceptance shows in buckets in this new single. I more than love it; I seriously think it is one of the best tracks released this year. What a crazy world….
