JUDAS PRIEST – No Surrender

by Maria Haskins

Holy wow. What can I say? I love this freaking band, this freaking album, this freaking track. “Firepower” is one of the albums of the year for me (and many others, I think), and this tune showcases why. KILLER vocals from Rob Halford, awesome riffs, drums, bass, melody, sound, everything, everything, everything.

Earlier this year Judas Priest announced that the band’s guitarist, the legendary Glenn Tipton, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Tipton will still be recording with the band, and still makes appearances at some live gigs, but Andy Sneap has stepped in on Judas Priest’s tour-dates. The band also announced the creation of the Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation.

There is now a special edition charity tee (with “No Surrender” on the back), and all proceeds from the sales of this shirt will be donated to the foundation. The t-shirt is available from Judas Priest’s website.

I’ve featured a Beach Goons song on Track of the Day before. Last year, I picked their brilliant, stripped back cover of the Spooky Black song ‘Without U’. They’ve just released a new album called hoodratscumbags, from which this song, ‘AM’, is the opener.

To be honest, ‘Without U’ was a little bit of an anomaly for the band. This is what they mostly do: punked up, garage band style surf music. With a little bit of Spanish thrown into the lyrics from time to time. I defy you to not have a least a little bit of fun listening to this. Check out the album too, it’s great. It’s music to pretend you’re 19 again too, drinking cheap beer and dancing like a maniac at a friend’s party while their parents are away on business.
