…out of the fire, NINE YEAR SISTER Ashtray
Nine Year Sister Ashtray is available on Gold LP, Apple Music, Spotify

When an artist or artists decide to go full ‘DIY’ with their music projects, the results can often go a bit wobbly. But Australian duo Nine Year Sister, sisters Jennie and Emma Wardle, have navigated through most of the pitfalls of a homespun project with their beautifully composed “Gold” LP. And when you do hear the subtle ‘flaw’, it just adds to the raw truths being gifted to the listener.
“Gold” is 14 tracks of lullaby harmonies, indelible poetry, unwavering connectivity, and picturesque storytelling. All the elements the duo’s burgeoning fanbase have come to cherish. And a great place to start with the album, if time prohibits you from talking in the full set from top to bottom, is the closing song, “Astray”.
“Ashtray” is a faithful stardust-sewn pop song chockful of poetical symbolism, “One man was blind/ But he could see out of his mind/ And he spoke to me ten pages deep/ Said give me your heart and I’ll be your eyes/ That was the start/ Kingdoms started falling apart/ Soon the dust will breathe in golden streets/ Secondhand marking the end of time…” Heady and conscious, verses like this one implant deep into the soul.
Nine Year Sister’s “Gold” LP is inarguably a masterclass in DIY album-making and the whole set is well worth a proper listen. But, let’s get you started with “Ashtray”, here at the GTC.

I will never see it coming
But I know that I will be there on the last day
When we leap out of the fire
And we leave it all behind us in the ashtray
I will never see it coming
But I know that I will be there on the last day
When we leap out of the fire
And we leave it all behind us in the ashtray
Taken away
Yeah-a-ay
Hey hey
