3 Reasons Why: Lowdown & Lonesome Singer-Songwriter Kendell Marvel
Kendell Marvel – Lowdown & Lonesome is available on iTunes.
by Walter Price
“Hurt like hell heartache and rowdy rebellion” is how renowned songwriter Kendell Marvel describes his back to the good ole days of country music album ‘Lowdown & Lonesome’. That era when your record collection was heavy on Hank Jr., Allman Brothers, Waylon, and Jones. A time when honky-tonks were smoked filled and the music was raw and tactile.
Although this release will probably be the first time you’ve heard Marvel’s voice, he isn’t new to the scene. Over a lengthy career in Nashville, you’ve heard his songs. He’s written for and/or collaborated with the likes of Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Blake Shelton, Josh Turner, and Chris Stapleton…to name drop just a few. And if you travel down Marvel’s credits, you’ll find that he has a knack for working with some of the most well-known no-gimmicks artists.
This history and an insightful interview Kendell did with Chris Shiflett’s Walking the Floor podcast (episode 107) sent me into one of those deep rabbit-holes into the world of one of the songwriters and performers rooted in authenticity working today. It was nearly impossible to choose just three tracks that could exemplify a stunning career, but here we go…So, before you check out Kendell Marvel’s ‘Lowdown & Lonesome’, let’s go back a bit with these 3 reasons why.
Blake Shelton – Never Lovin’ You
(Kendell Marvel / Chris Stapleton)
Jamey Johnson – That Lonesome Song
(Jamey Johnson, Kendell Marvel, Wayd Battle)
Chris Stapleton – Hard Livin’
