THUNDERMOTHER – Whatever
Thundermother is back with a new lineup, a new hard-rocking tune, and a brand new album set for release in February on Despotz Records. The band’s founder and guitarist, Filippa Nässil, is still on board, and the new crew consists of Guernica Mancini on lead vocals, Sara Pettersson on bass, and Emlee Johansson on drums.
The new album, titled Thundermother, comes out on February 23rd, and you can pre-order it right now at Bandcamp.
More about the album:
Together with three times Grammys awarded producer Thomas Plec Johansson (Mustasch, Hardcore Superstar, Watain etc.) Thundermother has maxed just about everything on the album. From the Deep Purple influenced knockout punch of “Rip Your Heart Out”, when singer Guernica Mancini throws lethal jabs over riffs that don’t let up for anything to Emlee Johansson’s crushing drums.
“We wanted a really fat drum sound on this album. If you listen to records with say AC/DC and Airbourne, you’ll hear that the drums are at a damn high volume. So, we put some serious time into getting a wicked drum sound,” says Nässil. “When Emlee hit the bass drum both she and the whole bloody house shook. It was such a great energy!”.

STONE GIANT – We Don’t Talk About It
by Maria Savva
I interviewed Stone Giant back in 2015 when I was blogging for the UK Arts Directory. I was excited to discover that they released a new song in December. “We Don’t Talk About It” is a fantastic foot-stomping rock track.
You can buy a copy of the song on iTunes, Stream on Spotify.
The Band are currently working on a second album. If you haven’t heard their excellent debut album, you can stream/buy it on Bandcamp.
DEER TICK – It’s a Whale
Deer Tick have been around for over 10 years now and hail from Rhode Island. Billed essentially as an alt-rock band, they have a distinct alt-country edge to them too, although one with a fair bit of grit to it.
They released two albums simultaneously last year: Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2, each showcasing a different side to their sound. The former is predominantly folk-tinged alternative country music – think Neil Young in his quieter moments, think Giant Sand. The latter, from which this track is taken, is louder and rawer and sits in the same bracket as Neil Young with Crazy Horse, or Grant Lee Buffalo, or Buffalo Tom.
Both are great records. Volume 2 is more my kind of thing generally I guess, and ‘It’s a Whale’ is absolutely my kind of thing. It’s the stand out track for me, with the catchiest guitar riff I’ve heard for a while and a totally relentless manic energy. The vocal has a nice sneer to it too, which reminds me of John Lydon and early Liam Gallagher (a bit). It’s great anyway…
