With the same weight as Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me“, the new single, “All or Nothing”, from Denmark’s burgeoning pop star eee gee [Emma Grankvist] is a delicate tale of defeatism and self-awareness. The kind of emotional honesty laid out before the listener is as vulnerable as it is brave. Letting the world in on your inner journey is a daunting process, but the outcome is beautiful and ultimately hopeful.

In a quote provided to the GTC, eee gee confides, “All or Nothing is about feeling inadequate and sorry for yourself, watching everyone else succeed in life. You’re feeling paralyzed from your lack of actions, and slowly realize that you now have to work twice as hard to get where you want to be because you’ve been snoozing your life away. It’s the unpleasant but important wake-up call, the awakening from hibernation.”

You, as I have, may find similarities to the realness of Lana Del Rey and Stevie Nicks, which is more than fair. But to be honest, eee gee is a voice all her own here. Telling her truths in a lush yet not hurried production and it’s enthralling, to say the least.

And to put an exclamation point on the already phenomenal single, the accompanying film will move you in many surprising ways. Directed by the brilliant Roberta Hilarius Reichhardt, the single-shot music video follows the singer through a shadowy morning in a fancy gown, as she strolls through what appears to be a chapel sharing her experiences. The sense of what was expected of an individual and the realities of what is actually needed really takes hold. The film, like the song itself, is a masterstroke in storytelling.

You can stream “All or Nothing” as well as see the music video, now at the GTC.
