DON’T BE SCARED, HERE ARE THE DIPLOMATICS
by Alle Royale To put it mildly, I see potential here. For the future of rock ‘n’ roll in its purest and rawest form, that is. And such hope comes from, among others, The Diplomatics. Formed in 2012, this Italian fivesome has but one mission: to revive the great sound of good ol’ rawk an’ roll from the Sixties and the Seventies, when loud guitars and melody were meant to go together like thunderous drums and tambourine. With these premises, it comes as no surprise that their debut LP, 2014’s self-produced and distributed “Don’t Be Scared, Here Are The Diplomatics”, has been recorded entirely on analog equipment at the famed Outside Inside studios. Some sounds are best heard from the reel tape, and the band makes good advice of this, blastin’ out eight tracks of high voltage rock influenced by the best of them, carefully chosen all around the world: Detroit (MC5, Stooges, Sonic’s Rendezvous Band), New York (New York Dolls, Ramones, Dead Boys), Sidney (Radio Birdman, Saints), London (early Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols), Stockholm (Hellacopters). The result, as you guessed, is a slab of kickass, pure energy r’n’r, passionately distilled in the garage out of the sweat and frustration of five young sleepy-small-town boys who are cumin’ atcha going for the throat. If the very words “rock ‘n’ roll” mean something to you, you’d better check out “Don’t Be Scared, Here Are The Diplomatics”, for records of such raw purity don’t come out just any other day.
