“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” once said the Bard of Avon. In many translations, he’s saying, how irrelevant is a name if the essence of the soul is the same. So, a few months back the songwriter The Ferdy Mayne [Shane O’Malley Firek] announced that he, once again, will rebirth his artistic self. Albeit via some familiar and/or revamped older tunes and story songs.
This is now and, as promised, The Ferdy Mayne is no more. In his place, we introduce you to Turner Porter via a new EP called ‘Chase That Jackrabbit’. A set described in a Bandcamp post as, “A collection of songs that defined The Ferdy Mayne from the start: rough-edged Americana about wild midwestern nights, young love and dark nights.”
So while you may find some familiarities between his former self and his new moniker, one thing remains the same— Honest stories, memories and new horizons told in a forthright song will never go out of style—no matter what you call its creator. Shane O’Malley Firek and Ben Collins (Minihorse, Frontier Ruckus, Ally Evenson) came together in the winter of 2022 to remix, remaster and overdub tracks that Firek felt were meant to be heard by a wider audience.
