Whatever it was a few years back that sparked the new wave of post-punk artists to come out of nowhere to breathe fresh melodic air into the hallowed genre, I say, keep on keepin’ on. If you need further proof that this sound is alive and kickin’, out of Columbia, South Carolina comes Candy Coffins and their upcoming episodic album ‘Once Do It With Feeling‘ (October 21, 2022).
The lead single or first chapter, “Every Day A Fresh Atrocity”, will undoubtedly transport any fan of the early post-punk era back in time. With easy comparisons to The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, and even hints of Joy Divison can be heard. But don’t get twisted here, this track isn’t a mimicry carbon copy of those rock n roll heroes, but rather a respective next step in the reconstituted goth-tinged indie rock movement.
Highlighted by songwriter Jame Lathren’s shadowy if not pained vocals and driven by the band’s The Smiths demo tapes sound, “Every Day A Fresh Atrocity” is a fitting gateway into the anticipated album. A set described on the band’s Bandcamp page, “Once Do It With Feeling” chronicles a relationship from the onset of the first crack to its complete crumbling dissolution. All the feelings and emotions of tumult are captured here, from both persons’ perspectives. The record showcases the mature strides the songwriting has made and relates these themes via the vehicle of the band in its confident, cohesive current form.”
A heady journey is ahead no doubt. As you wait for the album to drop, make it a double feature and stream “Every Day A Fresh Atrocity” as well as the second single, the Bowie/Lou Reed-vibed “Seaside Girls”, here at the GTC.
