YOUR AUTUMN PLAYLIST #3: Blaze – “Gonzo Indie Country-Western Opera”

Are you tired of running around looking for the perfect collection to add to your Autumn playlist? Fear not, Ethan Hawk has a new movie and the subsequent soundtrack, ‘BLAZE Original Cast Recording’, is just what your Autumn has ordered.

I can only count a few times I’ve heard and fallen in love with a soundtrack before ever laying eyes on its film. Perhaps Harold and Maude, Repo Man, and The Wall. I went on to idolize two of those films and I have a sneaky suspicion I’m going to do the same with Blaze.

To catch you and I both up on what the film is about, here is a description excerpt from Light in the Attic Records, “The cornerstone of Blues and Country music is storytelling, but only the most able messengers can carry the words of another as their own. So goes the story of Texas singer/songwriter/poet Blaze Foley, whose vision has been kept alive by legendary artists like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lucinda Williams, and John Prine. It’s in the spirit of this great musical tradition that writer/director Ethan Hawke and his cast and crew set out to create the first ever “Gonzo Indie Country-Western Opera” film, BLAZE.”

I grew up and worked in and around Austin most of my life. Yet, sadly, I hadn’t heard of Blaze Foley. Perhaps this is the precise reason Mr. Hawke (an Austin native) decided to get this story out. No doubt. And with a cast recording as powerful and beautiful as this film has, the catalog and legend of Foley will grow and be cemented even further into Texas music folklore.
