There’s something rare and magical when a song catches you off guard, captivating with its sympathetic and sincere lyrics and retro-vibed yet timeless pop soundtrack. Dublin-based pop-star on-the-rise Ailbhe Reddy’s heart-rending, “Time Difference”, is an indelible tale. A memories are tactile and not as fleeting as you’d like track based on the storyteller’s past relationship journeys. “The lyrics are dealing with how it feels to make something work long-distance while living on a very different schedule to my girlfriend back home. But it also reaches back to other times in other relationships where I couldn’t make things work because of the same issues, there was always something in the way, be it physical distance or timing.”, Reedy is quoted in a statement provided to the GTC.
I keep an eye on the time difference
Anything to close the distance
The distance between us
I keep an eye on the time difference
Anything to close the distance
The distance between us
You know that I try
Hear my voice on the line
You know that I try
Hear my voice on the line
You know that I try…
Just as fascinating, is the accompanying film. Co-directed by Reddy and oft collaborator Ciaran O’Brien, the video follows the star throughout the mundaneness of a day. With a mesmerizing deadpan stare into the camera, invalditátng the fourth wall, and an ancient landline in hand, waiting for things to change…do they? You’ll have to watch to see. One personal sidenote or highlight if you will, there’s a scene where Reddy pushes backward in an office chair that has a large amount of poetry in its movement as does the impulsive dance in the pub, for that matter. Sincerely brilliant.
And you can watch the film below and make sure to add this one to your love is a delicate-and-tricky-beast playlist.

“Produced by Erland Cooper and Tommy McLaughlin (producer and touring member of SOAK), the single is just one of many deeply intimate and absorbing tracks planned to feature on her upcoming debut album – set for release via Ailbhe’s own label Friends of the Family. Three years in the making, her forthcoming album will find Ailbhe ruminating on the rites of passage in life as a young, emerging, queer artist from Dublin.” – press release via Sonic PR
