Young Winona Red Dress

As the band’s single releases will attest, LA-based rocknrollers Young Winona’s vocalist Cassie Gaffaney has a vocal dexterity that’s a notch above. And YW’s latest track, “Red Dress”, is brilliant proof of such a claim. The song begins with a Nancy Sinatra vibe just before it breaks into a 1990’s style alt-rock assault. And the contrasting styles merge effortlessly. Pop meets rock.

Replete with powderkeg crunchy riffs and bold backbeat, “Red Dress” is chock-full of all the spirits of LA’s fascination with British modern rock. And it’s pretty damn killer. This is a sounds-better-at-top-volume song that’s made better by the less is more production. No need for studio tomfoolery, this song is straightforward rock n roll you can groove to. Not to mention a couple of the best-written lines, “Just when I think I’ve had enough you go and show me your stuff / Just when I think you’re interested I keep forgetting you’re dead.”, and also the far-out guitar licks at the 2:31 mark. All and all, “Red Dress” is post-grunge at its pinnacle.

Young Winona (Cassie Gaffaney, Geoff Maddock, Nick Gaffaney) is inarguably becoming an integral part of the resurgence of Los Angeles’s hallowed rock scene. But by all means, don’t take my word for this, stream this dynamite single and see its Ed Shiers-directed music video and try your best to mount a dispute.

This is pretty much our whole-hearted ode to 90s band, Elastica. Fuck it, we love them.” – YW
