Wish Queen Return is available on Saturnalia, Apple Music, Bandcamp

Wish Queen Return

by Walter Price

There are haunting undertones in Wish Queen’s non-single track “Return” from her poetically addictive LP, “Saturnalia“. The daunting realization that growth and transformation are intertwined and the consequences are inevitably uncertain is all the anxiety one can handle—appears to be the message within this shadowy story.

Wish Queen laments, “I’ve been dreaming of the stage/ A place to purge my sorrow
And my rage/ A place to end this long coming-of-age/ But I’ll still feel it, either way—And every time I hear my name/ I fear I’ll never learn/ How to accept change/ I’m waiting on the Great Return”. The chills, they’re multiplying…

“…the Great Return“, what a stroke of genius imagery being put forth. Of course, this could mean many things to whoever is soaking up this song. Does this mean a lingering post-pandemic recovery and a return to our old or perhaps uncertain new selves? Is Wish Queen coming out of something deeply singularly personal? Or is it more a nod to the powers of astrology—let’s assume, for this listener anyway, that it’s a bit of all working in harmony. Or maybe you’ve heard these words and they hit altogether differently—which is all the magic of a well-written piece.
