NEW SOUNDS: PENNY IKINGER – “Tokyo City” from the ‘Tokyo’ LP
Penny Ikinger – Tokyo is available now @ iTunes.
by Walter Price
Australian alt legend Penny Ikinger has been down many winding sonic highways during her career. But arguably nothing as exciting as her recent release ‘Tokyo’. A collaborative work with Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) and various musicians from the Tokyo Psych-rock underground scene.
This collection is neither singular nor monotone. Its an album similar to experimental eras of New York and London during the late 60s and early 70s. Blending art, folk, twang, poetry, and uncommon together instrumentation. Music aficionado will find intricate revelations in every nook and cranny.
The track “Tokyo City” is this album’s perfect calling card. There’s a certain similarity to the way Lou Reed would write love letters to New York, Not romantic beautifications, Rather, appreciations of the grit, fears, and wonderment that drives the darker side of a metropolis.
For fans of Pauline Andrès, Nico, David Lynch, and Andrea Schroeder.
