When feminism gets a rockabilly-soul anthem such as the recent single “Big Boss Mama” from Tami Neilson, the world will bop in unison. A track with oodles of sass and bluster spilling from the speakers, it’s impossible not swivel and bounce as the lyrics take the power of women to the next level.
The video, directed by Neilson’s brother Todd Neilson, is jam-packed with historic women of strength and lore. A wise and fun film that should be played for school kids in their history lessons. Speaking about the video, in a press release, Neilson explains, “He (Todd) wanted to create portraits of powerful women throughout history (Elizabeth I, Cleopatra), women who broke through the barriers society has placed on females (Annie Oakley, Amelia Earhart), courageous women who battled injustice (Rosa Parks, Joan of Arc) and told me to choose two women who I admired, that influenced me directly. Being a woman who is lucky enough to call two countries home, I chose to pay homage to Buffy Sainte Marie as my Canadian/First Nations influence and Jacinda Ardern (Prime Minister of New Zealand) as a woman I greatly admire for my New Zealand influence.”
If you’re looking for a good time and love a shimmyin’ and important message, “Big Boss Mama” is going to slide into your weekend spin playlist just fine.
