NEWS: The Jayhawks

(Photo: Facebook)
Good news for us who enjoy the alt-country movement of the late 80’s and well into the 90s and beyond. You know the names Old 97’s, Uncle Tupelo, Sun Volt and Whiskeytown and one of the pioneers of the era, The Jayhawks, have found themselves in the midst of a flurry of activities.

The band has announced, via a press release on their webspot, that they will be reissuing Sound Of Lies (’97), Smile (’00) and the album that didn’t leave your CD player for months Rainy Day Music (’03). We the people will see all three being released in re-mastered CD form on 1 July of this year and then on vinyl 5 August. Mind the gap….

According the press release all three albums will feature bonus tracks, liner notes and new photos.

Bonus Tracks:

Sound Of Lies

  • I Hear You Cry
  • Sleepyhead
  • Kirby’s Tune (studio outtake)
  • It’s Up To You (alternate version)
  • Sound of Lies (rough mix)

Smile

  • Who Made You King (studio outtake)
  • Gypsy In The Mood (studio outtake)
  • A Part Of You (demo)
  • Life’s Little Ups And Downs (live)
  • Greta Garbo (demo)
  • Five Cornered Blues (demo)

Rainy Day Music
  • Tailspin (“Inbred” version) (demo)
  • Waiting For Salvation (demo)
  • The Book You Wrote (demo)
  • False Eyelashes (Blue-Eyed Soul) (demo)
  • Won’t Last Long (demo)
  • In the Canyon (live)

If you’re finding that better than dandy news, wait for this part. In support & celebration of these reissues the band is heading out on the road with Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Tim O’Reagan, Kraig Johnson and Karen Grotberg in the line-up. Yeah, that is the shiz! The press release adding this tidbit, “Since virtually none of the songs from these 3 reissued albums have been performed in concert by The Jayhawks in over a decade, the setlists this year for will focus on Sound of Lies, Smile and Rainy Day Music, augmented by older Jayhawks songs, well-chosen covers and some rarities.”

Right on Indeed.
