Coming to terms with what once was is a heavy burden to contemplate. The new single from Brooklyn-based Carli & the Dark, “Mimi”, is a fragile lament about an inevitable relationship shift. Vocalist Carli Naff sings, “She wrapped me in her rosy hair/ And held me there/ Until we fell asleep/ She said If you feel like a child/ Just come to me/ I’ll be your guide/ I know you inside.”. Then, as time and moments can change everything, the songwriter remembers the contrast, “She doesn’t do that anymore/ She says if you feel like a child/ Just sit and read/ I’m not your guide/ The balance isn’t right”. Moving on, severing ties, are rarely easy journeys and this beautifully written song, at times tear-inducing, is heartbreakingly real. And therein lies its overwhelming power.

“Carli & The Dark is the project of Carli Naff, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter from Phoenix, Arizona. Naff studied acting and was auditioning in New York City in 2017 when she learned how to play guitar and wrote a song for the first time. At the time, Carli had been struggling with a vocal injury. A doctor told her that the strain was not from singing, but from poor technique while speaking. Her first EP was written while learning how to speak and changing her career path.”
