A few things I instantly recognized about Mike West as I traveled through his music this past week. This singer-songwriter may be rough around the edges as he celebrates his love of folk and blues. But that is perfectly in step with his earnest approaches. This UK troubadour is raw at near every note, creating haunting landscapes. And when West summons that guttural growl, it wants to tear at your soul.
His recent release ‘Rusted’ is a 5 track collection that showcases his angles and respects. You can’t help but notice pinches of delta-blues, Mad Season version of Layne Staley, and even a spare amount of Leanard Cohen here and there. All n a stripped down ode to traditional sounds.
Mike West is an artist to keep your ears on.
