…time suspended, MEN WITHOUT HATS If the World Should End Today
by Walter Price
The foundations of synth-pop shouldn’t be spoken about without the contributions of Men Without Hats. Sure, we all know that bigger-than-life smash hit, but if you’re like me (and perhaps have been around longer than expected) you may remember some of this seminal Canadian outfit’s deeper-dive tracks that have stood the test of time. Like “I Got the Message”, “Bright Side of the Sun”, “O Sole Mio”, and of course, “Pop Goes the World”.
But, perhaps to some, those indelible tracks are somewhat ancient history, old Hat, if you will. But worry not you fans of beautifully straightforward new wave, Men Without Hats have returned with a near-perfect collection of new songs that’ll have you dancing and twisting as you contemplate the zeitgeist messaging they’ve woven throughout. Don’t worry, nothing Twitter-style preachy, just some sweet reminders that the human race is as delicate as ever. No bíg deal, right…
The album, “Again, Pt 2”, marks the band’s first set of new sounds in 10 (TEN!) years, and to get you acclimated to this fun and enthralling retro-vibed LP, check out the single “If the World Should End Today” feat. Sahara Sloan. This is as timeless of a Men Without Hats single as there could be. No over-weighted lyrics, yet there could be a dual meaning afoot. Is this a song reflecting the simplistic and awe-inspired pangs of beauty/love or is this a song a bit deeper and having a look at the turmoil of the planet…you’ll have to stream a few dozen times at tiptop volume and decide for yourself. What is abundantly clear, is that this single as with the entire LP chockful of hooky earworms throughout transcends time.
It’s also comforting to know that MWH is still out there making music, entertaining folks from huge stages around the world, and still spreading their social conscience messages disguised as tasty synth-pop. Kudos!
You can stream “If the World Should End Today” as well as “Again, Pt 2” (in full), now at the GTC.
