With a dedication to a literary giant and full of wonderment that exploration can inspire, the recent single, “A Sun Set Too Soon”, by NYC-literarian singer-songwriter Jake Benjamin is a romantic track cherishing all the beauty that idealism can offer.
In a quote provided to the GTC Benjamin shares, “This is my twist on an Irish folk song depicting the story between two men, a wandering romantic and his dream. I wrote it song after exploring Dublin and immersing myself in the wonderful LGBTQ+ scene there,”.
A man fell in love with the smile of a twilight sky
His heartbeat stopped when it caught his eye
He was a phantom with golden hair
That made the dawn seem less than fair
My love’s a sun that set too soon
And I’ll dream for another dance with you…
That lovely eager anticipation in the newness of the unknown told in Benjamin’s vulnerable vocals and lyrics are both sincere and beautiful. And if a song like this has the opportunity to introduce a listener to the likes of Oscar Wilde, as The Smiths had done for me as a youth, well then, what a result through and through.
This anthemic lullaby features Dominic Ingham and Adelide and is taken from a larger project called ‘Broken Stars’. The in-progress collection’s inspiration is explained by the songwriter, “I decided that the songs on this record should tie into themes of the psyche and the human spirit. Some of the songs were written from famous artists’ quotes, and others were written from my own experiences with anxiety, depression, relationships, and sexuality. Today, I’m open to showing all the aspects of my life, including my queerness.”
You can stream the double A-side and see the short film, directed by Jake Benjamin himself, now at the GTC.

“Near the end of his life, Vincent Van Gogh wrote, “I have put my heart and soul into my work and have lost my mind in the process.” Those words beg the question: what does one do when the inspiration is gone?
This sentiment resonated with indie-alternative artist Jake Benjamin. Jake was at a personal and artistic crossroads when he wrote his latest body of work, collectively known as Broken Stars. This artistically adventurous and boldly vulnerable opus was inspired by reading The Letters of Vincent van Gogh, a collection of correspondences from Van Gogh to his brother, Theo.” – bio
