Hello Florence + The Machine
by Walter Price This is going to start off a bit weird and then a go a bit newly minted fanboy. On with it, until last night I had never heard a song sung by powerhouse vocalist Florence Welch and her Machine. Catching up on missed episodes of The Graham Norton Show on YouTube I caught the artists perform “Ship To Wreck” from the forthcoming Marcus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Björk) produced ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ album out 1 June. Why I haven’t listened to this amazing voice is a mystery. The press has been kind and people I know back up all the hoopla but for whatever reasons, this was my first time. And I felt like I had lost a bit for not knowing the sounds she produces until now. You know what they say, “Mieux vaut tard que jamais…” Welch is in my wheelhouse, a soulful blues toned delivery and a no fuss straight ahead performer that rocks the timbers. Then the sugar on the moment of discovery was the post-performance couch banter. Welch seems humble and earnest. How refreshing. Take notes hipsters.
